The Use of Abusive Language Among Law Enforcement Officers and General Public
In my humble opinion, most of us use abusive language as a form of stress relief. It is applicable not only to policemen but to everyone as a means of addressing stressful situations. God bless.
Generalization and Reality
It would not be correct to generalize and state that all policemen use abusive language. However, there are indeed instances where some non-policemen also resort to using such language. Abusive language or behavior often stems from a knee-jerk reaction when an individual is under stress or aggression. If we can train people and minds to handle challenging situations without becoming overly agitated, we can significantly reduce the number of people who use abusive language.
Influence of Environment and Circumstances
We learn from our surroundings and circumstances. People who are consistently around others who speak softly tend to adopt a softer tone. Conversely, being surrounded by individuals who are rough and aggressive can quickly influence one's behavior. Additionally, work pressure and the need to vent frustrations often prompt the release of such language. If not managed, these pressures can lead to chaotic mental states. Once someone becomes accustomed to using abusive language, it becomes a default response, even if it may sound natural to the user and indeed inappropriate to others.
Conventional Wisdom and Real-World Experiences
There is a common belief that the masses use abusive language frequently, often expressed in every sentence. This is especially true among strict government officials dealing with citizens. It is often said that rude people do not understand soft language, especially when speaking to individuals from less developed regions. This view is somewhat reinforced by the belief that in some countries, like Britain, Canada, the USA, and Australia, polite language is more common. However, if we look at these countries' human development indices (HDI), we can see that there is a correlation between the level of education and civility in communication.
Soft-spoken individuals are typically addressed by soft-spoken police forces, and vice versa. The absence of a culture of respectful communication among the general public may make it challenging to expect courteous treatment from police officers. This lack of respect is often met with the same level of disrespect, forming a cycle of mutual abrasiveness.
A Call to Action
What is missing in many discussions is a recognition that abusive language is not exclusive to the uniform. Some humans may be inherently more prone to use abusive words, but this is not inherent to the uniform itself. There is no excuse for poor behavior, as humans must learn to manage their stress and emotions effectively. It is a call to action: how will humans learn to control their impulses and communicate respectfully, even under duress? It is a question that touches on the core of interpersonal relationships and societal norms.
Hypocrisy Alert! When dealing with citizens, law enforcement officers must set an example of respectful communication, even in the face of adversity. The treatment one receives often reflects how they treat others, creating a cycle that ultimately affects the entire community.
