The Journey to Becoming a Poet: Motivations and Inspiration

My journey to becoming a poet began not with a specific poem or a moment in time, but with a deep-seated need to express myself and an inherent passion for language. Writing poetry for me, at its core, is about capturing the essence of my emotions and thoughts on a page.

Early Beginnings and a Self-Composed Poem

One of the first written pieces that still deeply motivates me is a poem I composed in the 9th grade. It was a self-written piece that my English teacher appreciated, leading to its publication in a national daily. The poem went something like this:

"

I sit up at night and write by the light.
Just a pen in my hand and the fight to ignite.
With a trust that is gone but faith that is strong.
My pen is my hope and I write to live on.

"

Though it was not a polished work of art, the sense of validation from my teacher provided a vital spark. This poem represented the beginning of my journey, a moment of recognition that my words had value.

The Star and the Mirror

A little poem that comes to mind off the top of my head is about a star in the night. It went like this:

"

I see a star in the night. That star shines so bright.
I wonder how would it feel to be a star.
Then I looked in the mirror and saw that I wasn’t so far
From being a star.

"

While this poem may not have had a profound impact on my decision to write poetry, it symbolizes a struggle within: the quest to find one's own light and embrace it.

Erica Jong: A Beacon of Inspiration

One of the most significant inspirations that shaped my journey as a poet was Erica Jong, the author and acclaimed poet. Erica Jong’s work, particularly her book 'Witches,' inspired me deeply. Her unapologetic approach to writing and living aligned with my own beliefs and values. Her poetry was powerful and compelling, and her willingness to express herself without hesitation encouraged me to explore my own voice.

A Period of Uncertainty and Rediscovery

After Erica Jong, I took a 29-year break from writing, which included periods of doubt and uncertainty. However, in the spring of Easter Bank Holiday 2015, I felt a sudden inspiration once again. This resurgence of creativity marked a new chapter in my journey as a poet. The power of this moment and the subsequent writing became a testament to the enduring nature of creativity and passion.

Conclusion

The journey to becoming a poet is a continuous evolution, fueled by moments of inspiration and self-belief. My poems are more than just words on a page; they are reflections of my soul, my journey, and my belief in the power of language.
