The Enduring Saga of Balin: From Erebor to Moria
The tale of Balin, the dwarf prince of Erebor, is a story of resilience and perseverance. Long before the events of The Hobbit, Smaug the dragon attacked Erebor, leading to a massive upheaval in the Dwarven realm. This article explores Balin's journey, from his early days in Erebor to his ill-fated attempt to resettle Moria, and the significance of his enduring legacy.
The Fall of Erebor
Smaug's attack on Erebor predates the events of The Hobbit by 171 years. The dragon's fiery wrath claimed the lives of many Dwarves and devastated the city, leaving many survivors to seek refuge. The successful Dwarf communities in the Blue Mountains are a testament to their survival and adaptation.
Thorin, the rightful heir to Erebor, was about 20 years older than Balin, which makes Balin an infant during the time of the dragon's attack. However, Balin's survival and subsequent exploits carried him well into his lifespan, which the Lord of the Rings description suggests could be up to 350 years or potentially 250 years, depending on the source.
Balin's Rise and Fall in Erebor
The dwarves of Erebor, survivors of the dragon's attack, regrouped and eventually reclaimed their lost homeland. Balin, now 178 years old, was a significant figure in this new Erebor. He thrived during the 70 years of peace and prosperity that followed the elimination of Smaug. His wisdom and experience made him a valued leader among the Dwarves.
However, the tranquility of Erebor was not to last. When the War of the Ring erupted, Sauron's army targeted Erebor and Dale, once more putting the region in turmoil. Balin, along with many others, faced the new enemy despite the 78 years of peace and prosperity he had experienced.
Expedition to Moria
Balin's final venture was his ill-fated expedition to Moria, the ancient Dwarf kingdom known as Khazad-d?m. This exploration aimed to reclaim Moria for the Dwarves, symbolizing a return to their proud heritage and a desire to restore their former glory.
Despite the success of his early years and the prosperity he enjoyed in Erebor, Balin's expedition to Moria ended tragically. Killed by Orcs, his dream of a renewed Dwarf kingdom in Moria was dashed. However, his legacy lived on, a reminder of the resilience and determination of the Dwarven people.
