The tale of Balin, the dwarf prince of Erebor, is a story of resilience and perseverance. The Fall of Erebor

Smaug's attack on Erebor predates the events of The Hobbit by 171 years. The dragon's fiery wrath claimed the lives of many Dwarves and devastated the city, leaving many survivors to seek refuge. The successful Dwarf communities in the Blue Mountains are a testament to their survival and adaptation.

Thorin, the rightful heir to Erebor, was about 20 years older than Balin, which makes Balin an infant during the time of the dragon's attack. However, Balin's survival and subsequent exploits carried him well into his lifespan, which the Lord of the Rings description suggests could be up to 350 years or potentially 250 years, depending on the source.

Balin's Rise and Fall in Erebor

The dwarves of Erebor, survivors of the dragon's attack, regrouped and eventually reclaimed their lost homeland. Balin, now 178 years old, was a significant figure in this new Erebor.
