My mother loved Remembrance of Things Past throughout the seven or twelve volumes (I am not sure of the exact number). She was always encouraging me to read it. I, on the other hand, am an avid reader since childhood, though only because I preferred to be alone reading. Hormones eventually led me down a more social path, but my love for reading remained intact. Don Quixote was a joy to read when I was nine, and learning English in my 20s while studying structures and design did not deter me from reading complex texts. The entire Encyclopaedias Hispano Americana from cover to cover, as well as the Bible and other books, were not out of reach for me. However, I found Proust to be boring. The excruciating detail on how to be traumatized in life is something I cannot enjoy. I need books that are intriguing, marvellous, creating worlds with hidden stories. While I have a good vocabulary, Proust's work does not interest me. Although I can take sad characters and find them humorous (I might not have read Camus or Jim Thompson if I did not), Proust is simply boring to me. It is a prelude to all the “wokism” in the world, methodically and melancholically angry not only with the world but also with themselves.
