Innovative Ideas for Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and LitRPG Fanfiction
For those seeking inspiration in the realm of storytelling, here are some imaginative ideas across a range of genres. These ideas are designed to spark creativity and help you weave tales of wonder and excitement.
Science Fiction
Science fiction offers a vast universe of possibilities, from intricate paradoxes to societies transformed by technological or environmental upheaval. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
A group of children and teenagers grow up on a slower-than-light interstellar spacecraft intended to reach adulthood when they arrive at their destination and colonize a new planet. But when they arrive, or a few years before, they are contacted by another ship and discover that the planet was already colonized decades or centuries ago because faster-than-light travel was invented after they left Earth. They now have to adjust to living in "normal" society, going to school, and integrating into new communities. An artificially intelligent weapons system is sent to covertly infiltrate a planet using a small stealthy spacecraft. It hides underground, mines, and minerals, builds weapons/drones, infiltrates the planet’s information network, observes the inhabitants, and prepares to launch a surprise attack. However, the influence of the planet’s inhabitants and information databases causes it to decide not to attack, instead defending the planet from its masters. A young person who grew up in an adoptive family takes a DNA test to trace their biological family but discovers that their DNA is so different from all other known samples that their last known common ancestor must have been tens of thousands of years ago. It turns out that aliens or an advanced human society removed some humans from Earth tens of thousands of years ago, and the protagonist is one of their descendants who was sent to Earth for protection.Fantasy
Fantasy offers enchanting possibilities such as quests for lost artifacts, magical academies, epic battles between forces of good and evil, or portal fantasy. Here are a few ideas:
A society of gods or angels, or other immortal beings, play games with human society. One day, some of them take two powerful magical artifacts, a sword which grants immense martial prowess, and a necklace which grants immense beauty and charisma, and arrange for them to fall into the hands of selected humans-a "nerdy" or "cowardly" prince and a merchant’s daughter who isn’t considered beautiful. The intention is to create a narrative of a warrior prince saving his kingdom and his supernaturally beautiful love interest. Unfortunately, due to two of the gods/angels being distracted by their own love affair, the artifacts get mixed up, and given to the wrong people, so the prince becomes a supernaturally handsome and gifted diplomat, and the merchant’s daughter becomes a warrior and they don’t fall in love.Light RPG
If you are interested in LitRPG, here are some ideas for playing with the genre:
Reverse LitRPG: a group of characters from a computer or pen-and-paper role-playing game (RPG) are thrown into the "real world" e.g. possessing or replacing players. The characters must adapt to their new reality and use their gaming skills to survive and find a way back to their game. LitRPG meets Labyrinth: one or more people are sucked into a computer or pen-and-paper RPG. A character feels responsible and follows them, trying to rescue them. This could be the game master of a pen-and-paper game or the person who introduced the lost people to the game. The main character can be the one responsible for guiding the lost people back to safety.Urban Fantasy
The realm of urban fantasy is a rich source of creativity, offering hidden magical realms within modern cities, supernatural detectives solving crimes, and modernized mythological beings. Here are a few ideas:
Follow the adventures of a supernatural detective in a modern city, solving a series of unusual crimes involving supernatural beings or hidden magical realms. This could involve a mix of traditional detective work and supernatural investigations.Additional Inspiration
