How Aragorn Knew of His Royalty: The Role of Elrond in His Adoption
When Aragorn's father, Arathorn, was killed by orcs, Denethor, Steward of Gondor, saw the futility in battling Sauron's growing power. In the midst of despair, he took his own life, leaving his son Faramir as the heir to Gondor. However, during this turbulent time, fate had already set the stage for Aragorn's future as the rightful king of Gondor.
Elrond, the ancient and wise Lord of Rivendell, took Aragorn and his mother into his protection. Elrond, being Aragorn's great-56 times grand-uncle, had knowledge of the history and lineage of Numenor, Gondor, and Arnor. It became his duty to guide Aragorn and protect him from the dark forces seeking the heir of Isildur. As a child, Aragorn was given the false name 'Estel' meaning 'hope', and his identity was shrouded in mystery.
Over the years, Elrond watched Aragorn grow into a strong and capable leader. When Aragorn reached the age of 20, the time finally came for Elrond to reveal the truth about his origins. It is a testament to the wisdom and foresight of the Elven lord that he chose to wait until Aragorn was fully mature before sharing this crucial secret. This act of trust and preparation played a pivotal role in ensuring that Aragorn had the knowledge and confidence to face the challenges that lay ahead.
The revelation came as Aragorn returned to Rivendell after performing great deeds alongside Elrond's sons. Elrond saw in Aragorn the fullness of manhood and the promise of a greater destiny. Upon this, he disclosed to Aragorn the true identity and lineage he had always possessed. As a sign of their kinship, Elrond also bestowed upon Aragorn the shards of Narsil and the Ring of Barahir, both symbols of his heritage and the promise of his future kingship.
With the knowledge of his royal lineage, Aragorn was empowered to fulfill his destiny. This act of revelation by Elrond not only prepared Aragorn for his role as the future ruler of Middle-earth but also served as a cornerstone of the trust and bond between the two characters. The wisdom and foresight of Elrond ensured that Aragorn was not only aware of his true identity but also armed with the tools and knowledge necessary to lead his people towards a brighter future.
