Dalits Perspective on RSS: A Perspective Beyond Caste
What do Dalits think of RSS
There is a common misconception that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is a casteist organization that discriminates against Dalits, a historically marginalized community. This article seeks to shed light on the perspectives of Dalits towards the RSS, based on firsthand experiences and anecdotes, and aims to challenge such stereotypes.
Personal Reflections and Experiences
Personal testimonies can be powerful tools in understanding the dynamics of societal structures. Bhanwar Meghwanshi, an ex-RSS member, shares his viewpoint as a Dalit who was once an active member of the RSS. He emphasizes that the organization is not devoid of caste biases and poses a threat to the well-being of Dalits. His comparison of the treatment of Dalits by the RSS with the genocidal activities of the Nazis, although hyperbolic, underscores the deeply distressing impacts of mental oppression.
Challenges within the RSS Framework
Under the RSS structure, only individuals born in India are considered Hindus and are allowed to join. This policy, while seemingly inclusive, can still reinforce caste hierarchies. For instance, the RSS does not explicitly ban participation from Dalits, but the organizational culture and practices might inadvertently exclude them.
A Realistic Scenario: Community Mediation in Dewas, MP
One such instance where the mediation efforts of the RSS played a crucial role was in a small village in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, known as Kannuad. A communal clash between Thakurs and Dalits over a shamshan ghat (cremation ground) led to curfews and tensions within the community.
After learning about the dispute, two RSS leaders, respected for their integrity, were tasked with maintaining peace. They approached the sarpanch (village leader) from the Thakur community and also engaged with the younger generation from both communities. A meeting was organized with the children, who expressed a desire to work together and reconcile.
Despite initial adversities, the exercise of dialogue and mutual respect resulted in a significant breakthrough. Both community leaders embraced each other, and together with the younger generation, they decided to share the shamshan ghat. This event demonstrated the potential of the RSS to foster unity and understanding within the Hindu society, highlighting its role in promoting communal harmony.
Future Outlook: Unity and Inclusivity
The involvement of the RSS in community mediation and conflict resolution indicates that it does value the unity and interdependence of the Hindu society. It underscores the importance of the younger generation in shaping the future of the country. For India to achieve the highest form of excellence (PARAM VAIBHAV), the society must be united and inclusive, transcending castes and socioeconomic divides.
Conclusion
While there are valid criticisms against the RSS, it is essential to recognize the positive roles it can play in promoting social harmony and fostering inclusivity. By engaging with the younger generation and promoting dialogue, the RSS has the potential to contribute significantly to a more united and prosperous India.
