Yuyutsu in Mahabharata: The Advisor Who Chose Dharma

The Mahabharata is a profound epic that narrates the struggle of virtues and vices, depicted through a myriad of characters. Among these characters, Yuyutsu stands out as a remarkable figure, whose story is as captivating as it is complex. While labeled as half-brother to the Kauravas, his allegiance to the path of Dharma makes him a unique and intriguing character.

The Birth and Early Life of Yuyutsu

Yuyutsu's entrance into the story is as unusual as his character. During the impregnation of Desa Mei, a maid servant of King Dhritarashtra, a lump of flesh was found in Gandhari's belly. Wise Veda Vyasa, with his divine powers, transformed this lump into 101 pieces and placed each piece in a ghee pot, each leading to the birth of a son. From one such pot, Duryodhana was born, and from another, Yuyutsu, born after Dhritarashtra's maid gave birth to her son.

Yuyutsu, despite being a Kaurava, was significantly different from his peers. His birth under questionable circumstances and his inherent wisdom set him apart early on. Unlike his spots on the Kaurava side, he chose a path of righteousness, much to the chagrin of Duryodhana.

Yuyutsu as a Wise Advisor and Opponent of Duryodhana

As a Kaurava, Yuyutsu held a unique position. While he shared the same father as Duryodhana, his teachings and actions often contradicted his elder brother. He was known for dissuading Duryodhana, advising him on matters of morality and righteousness, even when it went against his interests.

The conflict, known as the Kurukshetra War, was a pivotal moment in the lives of the Kauravas and Pandavas. Yuyutsu's allegiance was initially with the Kauravas, but his commitment to justice and Dharma led him to switch sides. On witnessing Yudhishthira's absolute humility and the Pandavas' adherence to dharma, Yuyutsu defected to the Pandavas' side during the war.

His decision had significant ramifications. Not only did it ensure that the Pandavas had a highly trusted and valuable advisor, but his actions also shifted the balance of the war. As a result, Yuyutsu is remembered as one of the 11 warriors who survived the great battle.

After the great war, Yuyutsu held a significant place in society. He became the sole surviving son of Dhritarashtra and was responsible for the funeral rites of his father.
