Why Some Voters Will Never Support Certain Democratic Candidates

As a 5th generation Republican who shifted to a no party preference and eventually back to independent, my voting decision is guided by a deep respect for democratic principles and integrity. Throughout my journey, I have supported candidates from both parties, identifying those who align with my values on issues ranging from equal rights to the urgency of transitioning to cleaner and more affordable technologies.

The Importance of Uncompromised Principles

There are certain principles I will not compromise on, such as denying every individual their fundamental rights. This includes the right to vote and the right to choose, which are paramount in any democratic society. Additionally, I prioritize the restoration of measures to prevent the corruption enabled by the Citizens United decision. My commitment to these principles is unwavering, and it guides my decision-making in the voting booth.

No More Republican Support for Now

While I have a complex relationship with the Republican Party, particularly given certain historical actions and individuals' loyalty to Putin rather than the American people, my current stance leans towards no support for Republican candidates. This reluctance stems from a desire for systemic changes within the party, akin to the actions taken to reform the party during the Nixon era. Merely aligning with the party once again does not ensure that the worst leaders will no longer have undue influence, as exemplified by the actions of Mitch McConnell, formerly seen as promising, but later tarnished by his obstructionist tactics.

Support Without Compromise

To re-enter the Republican ranks, a candidate must either not align with the party to the point of contributing to a majority status, or they must demonstrate a thorough cleanup of the party to the extent that the most detrimental elements can no longer continue their toxic practices. This includes significant judicial appointments and a commitment to transparency and integrity in leadership roles.

Consistent Ethical Stance

The behavior of individuals like Donald Trump, or candidates who enable his actions, leaves a profound impact on my decision. Those who condone or overlook such criminal activity are not worthy of my support. My likelihood of supporting a Republican candidate will increase only when there is a clear indication that the party has cleansed itself of these elements, ensuring the progress and well-being of our nation.

The Role of Ethics and Integrity

The integrity of a candidate extends beyond their policy positions. Ethical behavior plays a crucial role in my decision-making process. For instance, Elizabeth Cheney, while not aligning with my policies, possesses admirable ethical standards. Similarly, figures like Margaret Chase Smith, who bravely denounced the tactics of Joseph McCarthy, set a standard for integrity and social responsibility within political discourse.

The Influence of Political Strategies

The strategies employed by political operatives, such as the Newt Gingrich/Frank Luntz GoPac memo and other forms of propaganda and soft-sabotage, have also influenced my stance. The unethical tactics employed to undermine the effectiveness of Democratic efforts reflect a deeper issue within the Republican Party. This ethical decay has contributed to my long-term non-affiliation with both major parties. While I appreciate the historical context and ethical stances of individuals like Margaret Chase Smith, the persistence of unethical behavior has kept me at arm's length from both political factions.

Conclusion

The path to my reconsideration of the Republican Party will require a profound transformation, one that prioritizes ethical integrity and a commitment to democratic principles. Until this transformation is evident, my stance remains firm. The political landscape is complex, and the decisions we make are influenced by a multitude of factors, but it is my unwavering commitment to these core principles that guides my voting decisions.
