Why Biblical and Quranic Texts Failed to Keep Me From Becoming an Atheist

Often, skepticism about religious texts emerged from beliefs in ideologies and truths presented within them. However, can reading the Bible or the Quran alone be the catalyst for someone to embrace atheism? Let's delve into why these holy books, when explored thoroughly, did not deter my journey towards atheism.

From Religiosity to Skepticism

My path from religious belief to atheism is surprisingly straightforward in one aspect: it boils down to a realization of inconsistencies and contradictions. For me, the Bible and the Quran displayed elements that made their truthfulness difficult to accept. It wasn't a moment of awakening but rather a cumulative understanding based on logical analysis and open-minded skepticism. If you question the authenticity of a scripture, it logically follows that the deity or deities described within it would also be reconsidered.

Understanding the Context of Ancient Texts

A critical factor in my evaluation of religious texts is an understanding of the historical context in which they were written. In the era where the Bible was first scribed, literacy rates were exceptionally low—below 3%. Further, there were no printing presses, let alone photocopiers or modern printing technologies. Texts were painstakingly copied by hand in monastic settings, which significantly influenced the perception and value placed on the written word. Organizing a modern-style propaganda campaign would have been an absurd waste of resources and manpower.

Interpreting the Author’s Intentions

The Bible, particularly in early works like Leviticus and Deuteronomy, and certain epistles, contains elements that can be interpreted in multiple ways. From a critical perspective, these texts may seem manipulative or fraudulent, but it's essential to acknowledge that the authors genuinely believed in the power of YHWH and were attempting to guide their followers accordingly. These works can be seen as earnest attempts to reveal truths about humanity, not deceive us.

On the other hand, much of the Bible and the Quran can be appreciated as great works of literature, with messages that transcend their religious contexts. They speak to human nature, offering insights and narratives that resonate across cultures and eras. However, this does not mean they are completely true or correct; rather, they reflect the views and values of their times. It's important to view these texts as products of their era, while acknowledging their lasting impact on human thought and culture.

Religion and Logical Analysis

Religious texts, like the Bible and the Quran, can come across as nonsensical when scrutinized. The contradictions, the horrific morality attributed to deities, and the lack of logic and forethought in certain narratives make them appear less plausible than ancient myths. Much like with astrology, where the initial allure faded into disillusionment, these texts crumble under the scrutiny of logical analysis and rational thought.

When I initially studied astrology as a child, I was captivated by the idea that celestial bodies could influence my life. However, as I delved deeper into astrology, the concepts became increasingly arbitrary. The elaborate charts and symbols, designed to explain the intricate relationship between celestial bodies and human behavior, became nothing more than a veneer of complexity covering an underlying lack of substantial truth. Once I realized the lack of truth behind these ideas, I saw them for what they were: comforting lies.

Conclusion

Ultimately, the rejection of religious beliefs stem from a combination of historical context, logical analysis, and a genuine desire to understand the world around us without the burden of superstition. While texts like the Bible and the Quran provide valuable insights into human nature and cultural values, they do not stand up to rational scrutiny. My journey from religious believer to atheist is thus a testament to the power of critical thinking and an open mind in shaping our understanding of the world.
