Is Science Fiction Romance Still Science Fiction?

Science fiction is a vast and diverse genre that often blends seamlessly with other sub-genres. Think of science fiction action, science fiction horror, and even science fiction romance. While sometimes referred to as science fantasy, these works are all still considered science fiction.

Defining Science Fiction

Trying to define what precisely constitutes science fiction has always been tricky. One critic humorously suggested that all non-fantasy fiction is science fiction. This means that what we typically call literary fiction can sometimes be considered science fiction if it takes place in a parallel Earth that is indistinguishable from our own.

To determine whether a science fiction romance is truly a work of science fiction, one must examine the importance of the science fiction elements to the story. If you can remove space travel, energy weapons, time travel, and other such elements without significantly impacting the plot, then the story is essentially a romance set in a science fiction setting. However, there is a sub-genre called space westerns, where such changes can often be made without losing the essence of the story. A prime example of this done well is the short-lived TV series Firefly.

Science Fiction Elements and Their Importance

When it comes to time travel in romance, these elements are sometimes merely a plot device to bring a modern woman into contact with a man from the past. Once the purpose is served, the time travel aspect is often ignored. However, there are instances where time travel plays a crucial role in the plot. An excellent example of this is To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis, which won the Hugo award for best Novel in 1999. In such cases, the story is unequivocally science fiction because the plot cannot function without the science fiction elements.

Therefore, it's important to consider how integral these science fiction elements are to the story. If they are merely window dressing, then it's more accurately classified as a romance in a science fiction setting. But if they are essential to the narrative, then it indeed qualifies as science fiction.

In conclusion, science fiction romance can still be considered science fiction if the science fiction elements are crucial to the development of the plot. Whether it's an action-packed adventure with space travel or a nuanced exploration of time manipulation, the genre remains diverse and versatile, allowing for a myriad of storytelling possibilities.
