Google Doc: My Favorite Writing Companion

Google Doc has become an essential tool for my writing process. It is incredibly simple and efficient, allowing me to easily collaborate and edit with ease. No longer do I need to rely on emails or clumsy copy-pasting methods to share my work. With Google Docs, I can add collaborators directly, and we can edit in real-time, which is incredibly helpful. Additionally, the history feature is a lifesaver, as it enables me to revert changes or compare edits without any hassle. This tool is simply a godsend for lazy writers like myself!

Hotspots for Inspiration

Where do I find the energy and inspiration to write? Here are some ideal environments that tap into the right vibes:

Libraries and Museums

Libraries are fantastic because they offer a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips. Museums, especially those that are both historical and engaging, can be a treasure trove of stories and inspiration. The blend of art, history, and creativity can be incredibly invigorating for any writer. Whether it’s the vast halls of a library or the detailed exhibits of a museum, there’s a story waiting to be written.

Natural Settings

Nature’s power to inspire is unparalleled. Parks, zoos, and even the coastlines can provide a serene backdrop for writing. The Kanis Park in Little Rock is a personal favorite. The greenery and tranquility in such environments can help calm the mind and focus the thoughts. On the other hand, the fluidity and movement of bodies of water like lakes and rivers can also be a source of inspiration. Swimming pools can offer a similar environment, where the water’s fluidity can provide a meditative backdrop.

Unusual Places

For those seeking something unique, try out a police station, hospital, morgue, or even a banking institution. These places may seem strange, but they can evoke powerful and poignant emotions. While most of these are off-limits, the energy in such places can be profound. However, be cautious about potential health risks and the comfort level of the setting. The idea that these places hold a certain mythical aura can make for compelling writing material.

Where to Sit Down, and How?

Physically, I find that my work depends on my mood and inspiration. Most of my writing is done on my desktop at the office, but sometimes I prefer the comfort of my home. I often find myself in the kitchen, living room, or bedroom, depending on my mood. Occasionally, I need a change of scenery and will venture out to a café or a quiet corner where I can write undisturbed for a while. When my workplace is slow, I use the downtime to write and email the results to myself.

Inspiration in the Mind

Often, the best writing ideas come to me when I’m not actively trying to write. I frequently catch my mind wandering, imagining character dialogues or developing plot lines while engaged in other activities. This diffuse focus allows me to capture ideas effortlessly and turn them into stories without interruption. These moments can be incredibly productive and efficient.

Adapting to Mood and Ability

My mood and ability significantly impact where and how I write. During periods of fatigue, writing can be challenging, and even looking at a screen can be painful. However, these moments of rest and reflection can lead to valuable insights. Conversely, when I’m in a peak energy state, I ensure I take the time to write and focus. Attempting to force productivity during these times can be counterproductive. Instead, it’s better to take these moments to brainstorm and refine ideas without the pressure of immediate execution.
