Exploring the Thin Line Between Human and Monster: The Art and Reality

Every so often, one stumbles upon the question: Can it be true that there are monsters who act like people and people who act like monsters?

But What is a Monster?

From a purely literal and tangible standpoint, there cannot be any real monster hidden among the human race. Monsters are creations of imagination and folklore, often embodying our deepest fears and darkest desires. They are symbolic beings designed to awe, terrify, and perhaps, teach us about the unknown aspects of our own nature.

The Monsters Among Us

However, from a broader perspective, there is a veritable plethora of monstrous acts committed by individuals who, in most other respects, may seem like ordinary people. These individuals, often placed in positions of power or influence, exist on a spectrum between humanity and monstrosity. Their actions, bordering on the reprehensible, make them appear more like the mythical monsters of old.

Perception and Perception

The idea of 'monster' is often applied to someone or something that we do not fully understand, or more ominously, the things we fear the most. In the world of politics, military leadership, and beyond, the term 'monster' is bandied about to label individuals who have made egregious mistakes. The question arises: are these individuals fundamentally different from the rest of us, or are they simply flawed humans, acting in ways that make them appear monstrous?

The Disturbance

Reflecting on a childhood memory, the individual inquired, 'Was I shooting spitballs, putting tacks on chairs, or stealing stuff from desks the disturbance that got me in trouble?' The answer is a resounding no. The actual disturbance was the simple act of silent non-participation. It was the act of quietly looking out the window at the natural world, a behavior that, in isolation, seemed innocuous but was deemed disruptive by those in authority.

The Quest for Understanding

In the face of punishment and isolation, the individual sought solace and understanding through the exploration of literature. "DON’T TALK TO HIM" and "NO TALKING!" were the instructions given. But from this isolation came another form of understanding: the discovery of literary concepts such as simile, metaphor, imagery, poetry, and shibboleth. In essence, "painting pictures with words," the realization that a mind is a "terrible thing to" tinker with, emerged as a profound insight.

The Inner Monster

It is a fundamental truth that every human has a 'shadow side,' a darker aspect often repressed but still present. This shadow side in some, manifests in actions and attitudes that cross the line into monstrous behavior. Yet, we all have moments of reflection and realization that our actions, no matter how misguided, are rooted in our own humanity. We are all capable of monstrous acts under the right, or wrong, circumstances.

Conclusion

So, does it hold true that there are monsters who act like people and people who act like monsters? The answer lies more in our perceptions and the contexts in which we view individuals and their actions. The line between humanity and the monstrous is often thinner and more permeable than we might realize. Understanding the actions and motivations of these figures, both in fiction and reality, can provide us with a deeper insight into the human condition and the nature of those who occupy positions of power and influence.
