Actors or Authors: Who Should Write Novels?
How Do You Feel About Actors Writing Novels?
Funny, it seems I come from the stage. My entire career is from live theatre. I started out performing at Radio City in 1965, then moved into show production and development. Stage actors are a different breed compared to film actors. In my opinion, a stage actor would have a better ability to write a novel than a film actor.
The 1990s were a tumultuous time for actors in the film industry. It was a golden era for film actors, as they didn't necessarily need talent. Those who couldn't get a job at McDonalds could still find a place in the film industry. All one needed was to be fluent in swearing, take off their clothes, engage in meaningless dialogue, and totally insult their audience. Over time, this industry became home to very insecure people with huge egos. They lived for awards, while the rest of us worked for our money without recognition, trying to guide others on how to live their lives but failing to live by the standards they set for others. Simply put, actors today are as useless and talented as tits on a bull.
The Role of Novels and Novel Writers
Novels should be written by novelists and authors. Performers who tackle biographical or non-fiction writing are also tolerable. However, I firmly believe that authors are better suited for fictional storytelling because they excel in this domain. There will always be exceptions where accomplished authors write exceptional fiction. My personal bias lies with authors, as they possess writing experience and love the craft of regular writing.
My four words for Tek War: Jason Bourne by William Shatner: Brilliant by today’s standard. Tek War may seem mundane in contemporary times, but it was ahead of its time. It was one of the series that inspired the corporatized dystopian future, albeit not anarchic. This series was among the first popularized works that blended postmodern universe building with the Tek War being both stimulated and fought by the authorities to sustain the anecellory economics.
Intentional or not, it bears an uncanny resemblance to Dune, like how this epic saga can be seen as an allegory for the War on Drugs, much like Dune can be an allegory for Oil Economics and Politics. It's important to note that Robert Ludlum, the writer of Jason Bourne, was an actor. Before the movie franchise gained popularity, his work profoundly changed the spy genre, creating the kind of hero seen in modern films. Tek War: Jason Bourne is as influential to the espionage genre as Sherlock Holmes is to detective stories.
If something is good, it is good. Shatner's work in Tek War: Jason Bourne stands as a testament to this. It's a fabulous blend of postmodern narratives and post-dystopian ideas, setting a new standard for the genre in the 1990s.
